The red queen book review

The red queen... where to start. Well, i really enjoyed the really different storyline. There are two classes in society those with red blood flowing between their veins and those with silver blood. The Silvers rule the reds in Norta, Each of the Silvers have powers like extreme strength, ability to control metal, minds and water. Those with Red blood flowing through their veins, were destined to be poor, with no skill other than to be bodies in the kings army they are sent to war at 18 and only return in a body bad or delisted from injuries. There is no hope if you are born red and have no skill, Mare is reading herself for conscription in a few short months, her three older brothers have already been sent to the front and she is next in line. Only a few nights before she is meant to be she meets a man who gives her the money she needs to save herself and her best friend Kilorn from the horrible future.

What she didn't expect was the future king, Cal to be the one to save her and give her a job as a servant for the royal family. What follows is Mare discovering that she somehow has the ability to make electricity from her fingers. A red born with the powers of a silver. The king and queen, decide the only way to stop the rebellion of reds rising up is to marry their youngest son Maven to Mare.

Aveyard's ability to develop a world was very intriguing, however, i was confused why it seemed the characters seemed to switch from technologically advanced to medieval times. It made me question so many plot lines and aspects, why there were cameras in the castle but then they use carriages as a mode of transport.

I didnt really feel the sizzle between Cal and Mare, in fact they felt more like really good friends than a secret tryst. I was also really confused why the author chose to use names so close together for the main protagonist and antagonist, Maven and Mare. They sound so similar it is easy to confuse the characters when reading for long periods of time.

There was a lot of twist in the plot line that i really appreciated, some chapters were absolutely un-put-down-able others on the other hand i skimmed through because they were so dry and boring.

All in all, i think its a nice read. As engrossing as some of the other fantasy books i've read, no i wouldn't say so. But it was still a good read.
