The shelf - book review

 Hello my fellow book eaters,

I have been incredibly inactive lately, in all fairness i have been trying to read as many books to write awesome reviews and suggestions for you guys. But the ultimate truth is - life has really gotten in the way. Like majorly. So now thats out of the way lets get back on track with some awesome book talks.  *deep breath* Ok fam, lets dive right into todays book review.

I have to admit, i picked up 'The Shelf', on a complete whim. I was perusing the book section of my local Big W store, and my eyes were immediately drawn to the cobalt blue coloured cover (*ahem it is here i mention the cobalt blue is literally one of my favourite colours and i buy just about anything in that colour). I turned over the blurb and my interest was piqued. i believe my internal monologue at this point was "Yasss queen! finally finally someone wrote a book that is super relevant to todays society. And Bloody Praise the publisher for taking the publishing world by the cojoules and publishing someone out of the box).

'The Shelf', describes the plight of the average over 30 women in todays social media climate. oh wow did Helly Action nail this.

Amy cannot wait for the day that her boyfriend of 2 years proposes, and be like everyone else flooding her instagram page with achievements, career goals and just all round nailing life.

Until the most embarrassing new reality tv show 'The Shelf' aires, and Amy finds her self dumped on reality tv, along with 6 other women who are now in a race to win a million pounds.

I loved how feminism was a strong theme towards the end of this book. What starts off as women being signed up to the show by their male partners, who outline the "issues" they have with their significant others. Embarrassingly categorising all the reasons when they have left them, on the shelf, turns into women going through challenge after challenge in a big brother style show to hang on to win the 1 million pound prize. This book was like a giant FU to men, because in the end these women showed their strength and especially when Amy's ex boyfriend comes back in the picture.

If you are looking for a laugh out loud, modern af, women fiction... may i suggest you choose the shelf? i dont think you will be as disappointed. It was like a giant tick in my brain as i was reading how bloody  modern the language, the themes and situations were. It hit a whole new level of target market and really represented the current situation. Women at 30 arent all married with children and you know what - THATS OK! i loved how this book made it ok, and the biggest plus - it didnt finish with Amy finding the love her of her life, or getting engaged.

And if you have read the shelf, then you can join me  being super excited for Helly Actions new book 'The Couple' coming out in 2021.
