The Rúin by Dervla McTiernan

Welcome to my newest favourite crime thriller author. Dervla McTiernan is an absolute master writer.

The Rúin follows Detective Cormac Reilly of the garda in Galway. In 1993: the young garda was called to a scene he will never forget, two neglected children, a crumbling house and a dead mother. Only the cause of her death is never found.

Twenty years later and Cormac is working cold cases in Galway when the little boy from the house, now 25 ends up jumping from O'Brians bridge (or so the police phone call states).

Maude returns to find the true cause of death for her brother, while his girlfriend Aisling is still shocked by what has happened.

But all is not as it seems, and the other garda are not as clean as one would think. When the killer is found a little close to home, and a 20 year old murder is solved Cormac barley makes it out alive before he see's through the deceit.

Woah. Can i seriously just say WOAH. I loved this book. There were so so many different storylines intertwined within the one main story. And do you know what...i loved it. Somehow Dervla intertwines not only the lives of the garda of the Galway station, but also the lives of Maude,  and Aisling. Dervla separates different character POV by distinguishing days within the book, and it makes it so much easier to read and understand without telling the reader whose POV it is. I loved Maude!! If anything happened to me I want a Maude in my life.   I love how well developed Cormac is, and throughout the book she teases to deeper relationships between himself and other garda. I have also noticed that she plants loose ends within her story which will lead the reader seamlessly onto the next story without feeling like she needs to explain everything all over again, because it easily connects over. Just when you think you have everything figured out, McTiernan throws another curve ball that proves she is a true storyteller.

This book had me constantly guessing, intrigued and floored. If you are a crime fiction lover i highly recommend this book for you!
